i'm a male to female crossdresser who's going to a fancy dress in my feminine guise, the themes characters from books (i'm thinking of going as hermione granger, as all i need is a school uniform & a black robe) but i would like some other suggestions

Hermine Granger is a good choice, but since it is a fancy dress party, I would suggest hermiene in her Yule ball outfit (nice dress), otherwise, the White Witch (Narnia) is a good choice, or perhaps Cinderella (that's a gown, and glass slippers too). Find something you like, that compliments you and enjoy yourself at the ball!

Anna Madrigal from Tales of the City
Mrs Bennet from Pride and Prejudice
Lady Bertram from Mansfield Park (you lie on the sofa all evening saying "I counldn't possibly do without my Fanny" without being in the slightest bit rude!)
Princess Leah
Lady Godiva (cheap with some "tucking" involved)
Fanny Hill (everybody loves a strumpet)
Maggie Thatcher (unfortunately for the UK she was all too real)

You could go as the evil queen from Snow White (the book... perhaps try Gregory Maguire's description). She's elegant and you can do a lot with her.

She's fun. Good luck!

I say go as Vera Charles from Mame. The Lucille Ball version where she is played by Bea Arthur. That would be sweet.

What about making a pinafore out of curtains and going as one of the Sound of Music children?

As you are a forest fan, how about maid Marian. The bonus being, if anybody criticizes your outfit tell them you don't give a friar Tuck.
