Do you think If they put an old movie out in the theaters today, the same exact way it was released, would it make money and be successful? For example take the King and I with Yul Brynner. What is your opinion?

Only in markets where this would be of interest to enough film buffs to draw sufficient numbers.

When I lived in the Bay Area there were several theaters which only put on foreign or special interest movies - like the oldies - and they did fine.

The problem is, unless there are enough people in an area who want to see it, everyone will just stay home and watch the DVD since that costs about as much as the movie tickets!

Many old, historic theaters play old movies and draw a crowd, but the key is to know your demographic . . . what is the age of the average patron? Are there enough people who want to see this movie on a big screen? Is it a movie that should be seen on the big screen (Gone With The Wind vs. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington)? Where do you place your advertising? But, this is for one theater out of several hundred.

As for a wide-release, it would be unlikely that a movie of old would make money. Unlike today, movies could not be seen any other way but in the theater, therefore it was a fantastic draw. Now, the movies are available in the video stores and movie channels in no more than 6 months after their release.

As much as I love the oldies, I think they would be doomed in today's market.

It would not have the same drawing effect as I believe you would imagine it to have. There are several movie theaters that cater to the classic movie buffs, but they are barely hanging on. Nowadays, people want to go and see the latest and most impressive things possible on the silver screen. There are very few exceptions to this, such as the re-release of first Star Wars trilogy and several CULT favorites like The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Im not very familier w/that movie but i have seen clips. I think it would be a hit with the crowd it was originally aimed for such as big fans of musicals or older people. I also think that true movie lovers and ppl who are able to appreciate movies for what they're for would like it. as for the rest of, NO. i can't even get my daughter to watch Charlie Brown or The Sound Of Music. Anyway, thats my opinion!

It would make money because you still have a lot of people that enjoy and appreciate the way it was...acting...script...plot...things of that sort. But it won't be successful because of the movies now with CGI and all that can be now that couldn't before.

I think It would bring in the crowds If I owned my own theater that's all I would show.
