Ségolène Royal is a 52 year old woman from the left (Socialist). Her husband is Francois Hollande - the Socialist Party leader. If elected she will be the first female president of France.

Nicolas Sarkozy is the head of the conservative party UMP and the Minister of the Interior.

Dominique de Villepin is also considering running, yet he will make his decision during early next year.

The election will be quite close.
"Ségolène Royal is the top presidential contender in France, according to a poll by BVA for Orange. 35 per cent of respondents would support the Socialist Party (PS) candidate in next year’s ballot. Nicolas Sarkozy of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) is second with 32 per cent, followed by Jean-Marie Le Pen of the National Front (FN) with nine per cent, and Union for French Democracy (UDF) leader François Bayrou with eight per cent."

Ségolène Royal and Nicholas Zarkoszy are on the campaign trail. It doesn't seem if anyone has taken a bold lead yet. Here in NYC, the NYC public station channel 25 airs the French news at 7 p.m. as well as news from other countries in the evening hours. Zarkoszy is pro-American. Royal is not anti-American, but she is committed to her socialist ideas. She used to work for former French President Francois Mitterald. It seems as if Royal could win this election in May although it's going to be a real close contest.

The last I heard was that the French Secretary of State was planning on running for Pres too. She's a member of the National Front (neo-Nazi) but is in the middle between this party and Chirac's party. And don't be surprised if the French elect a woman for Pres. Will '08 be our turn or will we be scaredycats and burst that bubble? Come on, Chile, Liberia, Ireland, all these countries have female Presidents.
