The Freedom of Information Act means the government can find out all they need to know about you.

The Data Protection Act means you cannot find out anything about them.

One allows privacy, the other prevents secrecy. There's a difference. The Data Protection Act prevents information about you being given to other people. The Freedom of Information Act gives you access to information other people have about you.

It's so complex to orchestrate that it has given rise to yet another new Department. The Information Commissioner's Office is the UK's independent authority set up to promote access to official information and to protect personal information. So it looks as though we're entitled to know all there is to know about public bodies, but they had better have a jolly good reason for knowing about each one of us. And I'm not allowed to know anything about you or you to know anything about me. I can't help wondering just who will be entitled to scrutinize our ID cards when they come into being!

There are many oxymorons in the legal system. There are catch 22's, redundancies, and lots of examples of things that cancel each other out. It is an example of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. No wonder justice is blind.
