Wall shelf or in a cabinet sunken into wall that is lit from above.

Just a different and maybe sprawled out series of simple shelves, like a plain but finished slab of wood laying across metal supports. Something that can allow people to look at and pick up the pieces that one would normally put inside a curio cabinet. I've never actually been a big fan of those myself...

*I'm thinking over the fireplace too :)

I made 6" wide shelving with pine wood in 10ft lengths and bought 3 wooden supports for each plank, they sold these carved wood supports and the lumber at Lowes, some paint and screws and I put these on two walls about 3ft below the ceiling and used it to display plants, and my old fashioned collectibles, a little red and white doily draped in one spot with a picnic basket on it, then a bird house and a wire sculpted chicken basket with another red and white napkin stuffed in it, just all farm type cozy stuff. You can do it with any decor, it's inexpensive and looks great! You could go modern with metal L brackets or Lucite brackets and a strip of metal siding for the shelf, get creative with it.

I bought this big showcase from a store that was going out of business. It is glass and holds all the small and large things and goes great with any interior design.

I use the den for my collectibles, it has built in book cases, so I display every thing on the shelves inside~~~~

You can place objects that have features in common (such as glass with the same color, or crystal objects, or porcelain objects) on end and coffee tables. If you place the like-objects together, it makes a bigger statement and doesn't look chaotic.
