It all depneds on how much you practice. At first for me my fingers hurts... but after a few days it stopped. You can learn basic open chords like a C D E G A rather quickly. I used emedia's Guitar Method 1 and it really worked for me it went over the basics of guitar and with a few lessons I was play actual songs it was great if you don't have a teacher and are trying to learn on your own I suggest it. As far as other stuff like palm muting, Barre chords..etc It really depends what you want to learn I have been playing for a year now and can play full songs.
http://logue.net/chords/ is a great site to look up chords. Here are a few other good sites to learn

If you play regularly, your fingertips will eventually get harder, and hurt much less.....also, your finger strength will increase.
Start out with a very basic beginners book or DVD. Chords do not take long to learn, but you have to start out by conditioning your fingers to move where you want them to first.

They will develop callouses and you will build up a tolerance for pressing your fingers against the strings. Every player is different in their rate of learning and development. I would say practice as much as you can, get with a guitar teacher if you can, and "just do it".
Am I gonna see you on VH1 storytellers in a few years ?

depends on how much your willing to pratice, play everyday and your fingers will harden up within the month and you should learn enough chords to be able to play a few songs!
I been playing pratcily everyday for like 10 years so me fingers are pretty hard now!

calluses will appear within a few weeks.
even years from now, your fingers will hurt after playing for a bit.
just warm up your hands before playing, it makes it easier to play and less pain too

I would guess that it would depend on how much you practice. Good Luck...I would love to learn how to play the guitar.
