Could someone who is a psychiatrist, or has experience in the field, tell me what is involved in a psyc. analysis? Specifically one focused on anxiety. Also, what is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Thanks.

As the prior poster indicated, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor with training in psychology. A psychologist is one who had gone to graduate school and has received a doctoral degree in psychology (either a PhD or a PsyD). In general, psychiatrists are the ones who prescribe medications. However, in 2 states psychologists are also able to do this.

Are you asking about the initial evaluation or the entire course of treatment for an anxiety disorder?

In the initial evaluation, the cliniician will likely conduct a structured or semi-structured interview. This means that they will ask questions that are written out in advance and asked in a specified sequence. These questions, and the answers to them, will help the clinician make a diagnosis. Based off of this diagnosis, the clinician will then devise a treatment plan and will go over this with the client at the next session. Because one's struggles are highly individualized, it's not really possible for me to say what the entire treatment process will involve. However, it will probably involve some desensitizaiton. This means that the client will gradually be exposed to situations or ideas which are contributing to the anxiety. The purpose of this is to make these anxiety-producing situations or events less scary so that the client can face them on their own later in life.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. A psychologist may hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and be called "doctor"; but, is not a medical doctor (M.D.). Simply put, a psychiatrist may prescribe medication or participate in much more in depth (electro-therapy) where a psychologist primarily provides counseling. I am not eeither as you request, but my dad under-went analysis for severe depression, so learned a lot. Psychoanalysis is Freudian. Essentially the patient is in a very relaxed state and says the first thing that comes to mind. Related to dreams, wishes, family life etc. Since the questions are coming from a neutral person the person tends to open more and they are able to make their assessment.
