Hi There,

I have a question that I was hoping you guys can help me out with.

I recently completed my Masters in International Politics and Human Rights. For my dissertation I explored the rise of China's superpower status and its impact on US foreign Policy. I loved the subject so much that I now would like to go a step further and undertake a Phd in the subject. Although I realistically would like to get a full time job as well.

My question is: "Is it possible to undertake a Phd on a part time basis if I am in full time employment?"

My friend says it is. His plan is to get a job with the UN but to undertake a PhD while he is working. It is such a fab idea and I would like to know whether or not it is realistic.

Cheers buddies!

it would be very hard work and you'd probably have to work nights.

Yes, it is possible but is difficult. It can be helped if you have a fellowship to pay for the Ph.D. (and pay you some) and also an internship somewhere else. But having a totally separate full-time job would be quite difficult.

(Also, consider a Ph.D. program that allows for dissertation by publication: instead of one big thesis that no one will read, you publish several approved journal or conference articles -- better sized chunks and often more useful for your career. This may be more popular in Europe, not sure.)

You know how hard it is to get through the coursework...you have a masters already. Are you married and have kids? It is possible, but it is going to take away from "social" time, and by that I mean family, friends, and extra activities. A PhD is A LOT of work. If you have commitments already, it is not a good idea to work and pursue this.

of direction that's conceivable, besides the undeniable fact that all of it boils all the way down to time administration. in case you are able to desire to paintings in parallel with your PhD so one feeds the different you may take care of it. I truly have a pal working finished time for a mining employer who's doing a PhD in mineral exploration. i'm beneficial in case you are able to desire to get a job regarding "international Politics and Human Rights" you would be away. solid success.
