Suspect you probably have malware (spyware / adware) on your computer.

Follow these steps and you should be ok.
#1 - Open mycomputer, right click on your C: drive, click properties, then click the tools tab, then click Check Now, check both boxes and click start. It'll say it'll have to run in safe mode, click ok then reboot. Let the scan run. Should take about 30-60 min to run, after its done it will autoload windows.
#2 - Start>programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Check all the check boxes, click start (or ok), this will start cleaning up all the temp files / deleted files / unused files on the computer. 99.99% safe unless you store files in your recycle bin (I've seen people do it, even though it seems crazy to me to)
After this finishes it will disappear off your screen.
#3 - Start>programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmenter (not required, but recommended to help speed up your computer a bit) Click Defragment, and let it run, should also take about 30-60 minutes.
The program will stay up after its done.
#4 - Go to the first link below, download Spybot, install this. Run it. This will scan your computer for spyware. Make sure you follow its update request when it 1st opens up after install it.
#5 - Go to the first link below, download Adaware, install this. Run it. This will scan your computer for more spyware (whatever spybot misses, adaware usually gets). Make sure you follow its update request when it 1st opens up after install it.

Perform another disk cleanup and another defrag (this time they should run in half the time) Then reboot, and hopefully you should be good to go.

Well Windows Live Messenger probably brought a virus. You might want to uninstall it and just stick with the old one or just try to reinstall.

Run a check disk from system utilities and try to defrag. That's where I would start.

Uninstall all versions, not just the new one. Reboot, and reinstall just the new one.
