When you're a kid, everyone makes a big deal out of it and you get spoiled for the day - special tea, presents, attention etc. Once you're an adult, it turns on its head - you're expected to buy cakes for everyone in the office, and if you want to go and do something special you have to take a day our of your annual leave - and arrange it all yourself.

Birthdays are still great, because they're your special day. But as an adult, the onus is on you to make them that way.

Spoil yourself a little. Buy a whole new outfit, underwear and all, and wear it for the first time. If you have some spare money, spend some on something you normally think of as a waste or an extravagance. Get a taxi to work instead of the bus, buy a sandwich lunch (complete with cake, drink etc) instead of making your own, let the diet go hang itself, buy yourself a book instead of making do with the free paper. Make sure you take the full hour for lunch, make sure you leave work on time. Don't bother going to the gym. Buy yourself some flowers. Phone out for a pizza instead of cooking - or go out for a meal. Go out for a drink, even if you don't normally go out on a weeknight. Go to the cinema instead of watching a DVD.

And if you have loved ones who tend to forget or not make a big deal out of it, TELL THEM. Sometimes people just don't realise that you want them to make a fuss, especially if birthdays aren't a big deal in their own family. Tell them in advance exactly what you expect, exactly what presents you want, that you do not want to do the washing up, that you should get the choice of what to watch on telly, because it's your birthday!

Happy Birthday.

I don't think it's a matter of not being good when you get older, forget about what that bit of paper says and enjoy yourself. It's quality not quantity.

When you're very young each year is something to look forward to, then you start going up in decades and panic sets in every 10 years until you reach a certain age when you stop worrying, accept the inevitable and be proud to clock up another year, especially when someone says "oh, I'd never have guessed it"

Be optimistic, whatever your age.

WOW people answering this question sure are sadistic/pessimistic/both haha!
Well I put it down to the fact that every year it is just one more of the same thing. You are used to having a predetermined day that people randomly get you gifts you;ve had several times over, like socks or money, when as a kid you got money you could spend on toys or games or whatever, and now the money goes towards paying bills or something.

Because when you get older birthdays are just a reminder of how old you are getting and that tends to take the excitement out of them.

Depends what way you look at life. I count my blessings and find as I get older that I have more blessings every year. Try to accept what you have and you will find life a lot more pleasant.

Good luck and happy birthday.

birthdays are of equal importance but when you grow older you start to view them a different way. it may be that you have less gifts or that you are having less people over.
