my husband is hispanic and I can say that he doesn't mind someone calling him amigo in a friendly conversation, or in a friendly way. He does take offense when someone calls him amigo as a tease, and he usually knows the difference.

Maybe, I dont mind it, because it means friends in spanish, but you might want to watch out though. Amigos= friends that are guys, amigas= friends that are girls. Some people might take it offensively. but you shouldnt be racist, and most people would probably be preferred to be called by their name. >:o

Frankly, I don't know. I call Hispanics by their names. I also don't call Englishmen, "friend". Though I would probably address French friends as "mes amis" if I was speaking in French, but probably not strangers. I probably won't like it if someone called me "kaibigan" (friend in Tagalog) because I would feel, "who the heck made you my friend".

Instead of making a generalization about the entire race, you should probably ask a person if that would offend them personally. It's hard to say what millions of people may or may not like.

They also love it when we call them Wet Backs, Beaners, Burrito Biters, Immigrant, Jockeys, Farm Laborer, Berry Pickers, and my personal favorite ... Roaches. Around here, they come out at night, just like their buddies, the Roaches! Welcome to America!
