Fart gas is the product of anaerobic fermentation in your intestines, similar to the production of biogas for fuel. Main constituents are methane, nitrogen, CO2, H2S, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. The H2S gives fart gas its orrible smell. The amount of each constituent varies according to what you eat. Not all the products are flammable. One problem with biogas is that its calorific value varies with the shits fed into the digester. Sometimes there is so much non-flammable content like nitrogen and CO2 that it won't burn. But if you like lighting your farts, dishes containing plenty of beans are good methane producers. And you may have noticed that vegetarians fart like carthorses. That's because of the high proportion of cellulose in their diet. William Shirer, an American journalist who reported from Nazi Germany, noticed that as wartime rationing became stricter and more fibre was added to bread, travelling on the Berlin subway was a bit like being gassed in Auschwitz, only he didn't put it quite like that.

The composition of flatulence varies from person to person. Most of the air we swallow is absorbed by the body before it reaches the intestines. By the time it reaches the large intestines most of what is left is nitrogen. The acids from the stomach and intestinal fluids cause a chemical reaction which produces carbon dioxide. The bacteria in the intestines produce hydrogen and methane.

The type of gas that is emitted from our hind-quarters depends on several things: what we eat, how much we swallow and the kinds of bacteria in our intestines. For instance: A nervous person who swallows a lot of air moves the waste through the digestive system rapidly and therefore their flatulence contains a lot of oxygen because the body didn’t have time to absorb it.

According to Dr. James Roth, 2/3 of adults pass gas which contain no methane. If both parents are methane producers then there is a 95% chance their children will produce methane gas.

The smell from the emitted gas comes from hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans. Both of these compounds contain sulfur. The more sulfur-rich your diet, the more stinky your gas. Foods such as cauliflower, eggs and meats produce smelly gas and beans produce a large amount of not-so-stinky gas.

By the way, on average, a person will pass gas approximately 14 times per day.
