What is the average life of a cable modem?

I have a Motorolla SB5100 and it does not work, I bought SB5120 and the internet works now. Should the old modem last longer?

Mine's going on 5 years now. Has even survived a couple of lightning strikes that took out several NICs and switches on my home network.
