India for centuries had been a land with immense wealth. spices, gold, diamonds, rubies, saffron, etc. In fact, the Portuguese and French got there before the Brits.The British came into trade but soon realized that by a policy of divide and conquer they could control this trade directly and thus reap all of the rewards.

India was a very rich nation before the brits robbed n plundered it.
But it had many states in it which were ruled by various rajahs. the british used the policy of divide and rule and they divided the indian nation against each other. and ofcourse the other thing was gunpowder
