If you got an offer from Cambridge University for studying a postgraduate course but you have to quit your job as civil servant, is it worthwhile? Is a graduate of Cambridge that important now?

I wouldn't bother. Students and indeed employers are much more sophisticated now. Certainly going to Oxbridge has a certain snob appeal, a bit like stating that you went to Eton or Harrow, but at the end of the day it is not where you studied that is important anymore but the degree class you obtain.

It is possible to study for a postgraduate degree at many universities now on a part time basis or even over the internet. If you really want a masters degree then this would seem a better option as you could study whilst retaining your job.

Ceasing work to study at Cambridge would seem to me to be a waste of money both in terms of lost income and additionally the cost you will face in terms of tuitions fees, etc.

You have to ask yourself what real value would it add to your employability at the end of your studies. In the 21st century I believe employers are more and more interested in the hands on work experience that you have gained and that this will increase your career prospects more than going back to the classroom.

I'd go for it. Shamefully, Cambridge still looks best on a cv, so if you can afford to quit work for now, you could get an even better job later. I'm doing a postgraduate course at the moment, it feels great to be learning again after 2 years at work.

This is a decision only you can make. Do you feel confident enough to be able to make the break from what is probably a cushy job, in the expectation of improving the content of your CV?
However, if it's an offer, it may be imprudent to decline. Give it some serious thought.
