This is pulled from Game Informer Magazine:

The Pros of the PS3:
1.) Cell: The powerful Cell processor's multi-core design should provide developers with unparalleled power once they figure out how to utilize the chipset's complex architecture.
2.) Universal Login: Universal login makes playing games online easier than ever.
3.) Blu-Ray: As a Blu-Ray movie player, the PS3 delivers next generation movies as well as games.
4.) Free Online: Offers free online gaming.
5.) Cross Media Bar: The crossbar interface is easy to use (especially for those familiar with PSP) and offer the ability to download music, photos, videos, browse the web, or purchase games or game demos through the PlayStation online store.
6.) Sixaxis: The Sixaxis controller offers unique gameplay mechanics with its motion sensing capabilities.

The Cons of PS3:
1.) The OS: The PlayStation operating system and Network isn't nearly as robust as Xbox Live's current state.
2.) Random Disconnects: Bluetooth wireless headset and controllers is currently spotty. Controller connection problems are a reality and it's not pretty.
3.) Price: While it's a cheap Blu-Ray player, it is one of the most expensive cosoles in gaming history (and an HDMI cable and input on your TV is required for 1080p movie playback.)
4.) Scaling: Since the PS3 can't currently scale video images to fit your TV, it requires gamers to either have a 1080p TV that accepts a 60 hertz signal, or a TV that supports images natively at 720p. Even though your TV may say HD on it, it may not be compatible. If it doesn't, games will only display in 480p.
5.) No Headset packed in: Since no headset is currently packed in, gamers must purchase a number of peripherals to get the full use of their system. Bluetooth headsets range from $50-$150 if you want to go wireless, and cables and remote controllers add up quick.
6.) No Rumble: The lack of rumble and a headset input on the Sixaxis controller is a disappointment.

Overall grade given by Game Informer: B

The Pros of the Wii:
1.) Ease of use: Despite the next generation controller, the Wii is remarkably easy to set up, taking only a few minutes.
2.) The Wii remote: There's no doubt that the Wii remote works well and offers interesting gameplay, even in traditional games like Zelda.
3.) Zelda: Nintendo once again launched a true classic game.
4.) Online: Though multi player isn't ready, it is encouraging that the company is finally taking a serious approach to the internet.
5.) The SD card slot: It's a small detail, but it is nice to see Nintendo giving owners some multimedia possibilities.
6.) Wii Sports pack-in: Nintendo included Wii Sports on launch.

The Cons of the Wii:
1.) Graphics: Theres a big disparity between the visuals of the Wii and PS3 and Xbox 360.
2.) No DVD playback: It seems silly that Nintendo didn't include this in the hardware.
3.) No hard drive: While there's a decent amount of flash memory and the SD slot, we're getting used to our systems having a hard drive.
4.) Wi-Fi only: It's odd that Nintendo doesn't allow for easy, plug and play broadband connections to the Wii.
5.) Gimmicky games: Although the launch lineup has some meat to it, a fair number of early Wii titles appear to be a bit shallow and rely soley on the novelty of the motion-sensing controller.
6.) The Wii remote speaker: It's a neat idea, but the sound quality on the remotes speaker is cheap sounding.
7.) No battery life warning: When your remote's batteries life give out, you'll get a generic connection failure warning, with no indication that you need to replace the batteries.

PS3 because 1. It will have the most 3rd party support of the 3 consoles. The 360 isn't doing too well in Japan, so it's going to lose Japanese developers unless it makes an improvement. The Wii already lost a lot of developers because of the GC disaster. 2. Blu-ray. Despite people saying it's unnecessary, I think it is absolutely necessary to have a next gen format because games are just getting so big that DVD-9 is not enough to hold all that info. 3. It will have a lot of exclusive established games, like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and Tekken. 4. You get a lot for what you pay for. Sure 600 bucks seem like a lot of money but think what you're getting: PS3, Blu-ray capabilities, Wi-Fi, different types of slots (SD, Memory Stick, Compact Flash), 60 GB Hard Drive. By the time you upgrade the 360 to meet the PS3, it's going to cost more than 600 bucks. 5. The Eye Toy. I think it's similar to the Wii-mote in terms of what it can do. 6. Games with native 1080p.

Well I own all three systems and out of the three I say the wii is the funniest by far. Though if he wants graphics get a ps3. There isn't a huge library for the ps3 right now and finding one is another story. The Wii is more available right now then the ps3 and some of the games on it now (Zelda: TP) and in the future (Super Smash Brothers Brawl) will keep it from collecting dust like my two gamecubes have as well.

Gameinformer magazine gave PS3 a B and Wii an A-. PS3 is like a high maintenance game, difficult to set-up, doesn't play all previous generation games, and a few other things, although the picture, when set-up with an appropriate HD TV looks really good, on the right games. Plays Blu-Ray.

Wii is easy to set-up, and the included Wii SPorts game is really fun. You'll need extra controllers though. Does not play DVD's I guess.

Okay, so I just got the Wii for Christmas, and it's pretty much amazing. I don't even understand why people want to pay $600+ for a PS3 when they could get a WAY better system for $250. So $600 for...meh, or $250 for WOO! + 1 free game that has FIVE games on it?!! (Wii Sports)

we had a PS3 and decided to return it to the store. We aren't heavy gamers as far as RPG and Shooters, plus, as long as the game is fun, we dont' care how pretty it is.

The wii is a blast. I'm addicted to making miis. It something that is just gimicky enough to keep interest, and Nintendo is bound to offer some good games.

it all comes down the the types of games and graphics. If he os done with x-box becuase of the hardware...i would hold out intil PS3 has all the bugs worked out. If he's sick of the games, go with the wii, he may have a lot of fun. Plus, the controlls seemed alot more natural for me to master than the PS3 or the X-Box.

Let him try yours to see what he likes.

PS3- Great graphics, doesn't play some PS2 games.
Wii- Motion sensor, remote flys into big screens.

You got the pros and cons, Wii's probably the best choice now because Sony's redesign the PS3. So if he can wait then PS3.
