I would say a guinea pig. They're easy to handle and very rarely bite unless they're startled. I've had guinea pigs for about three years now. Please hear me out though (some people find this stupid) go to petfinder.com they have tons of guinea pigs on there that need good homes to go to! It's even better if you can get two guinea pigs (females are good together, if two males have lived together for their entire lives they'll usually be good together but some will fight for dominance, never put a male and female together!). If you're considering getting one please read up on them. Some sites that I recommend are:

www.cavyspirit.com
www.cavycages.com

Let me know how it goes, if you need anymore help or have questions feel free to message me.

Well, that leaves out hamsters and gerbils if you're asking for a pet that is not prone to bite.

How about a pet rat? Among all the positive attributes of these small animals they are also easy to care for when you only have one or two. Two would be better as, even though rats are very personable, that also like the company of their own kind.

Just remember that no matter what pet you buy for your 10 year old that it has to be an animal that you are willing to care for as well. You may very well end up being the care-giver of the chosen pet.

All small, caged animals are prone to bite. Reptiles might be better, however they aren't "cute and cuddly" as most kids want.

If you do want a fuzzy critter, I'd suggest a guinea pig. Since they're a bit bulkier than a hamster, they're easier for kids to handle without getting bit. But get one from someone who knows it's temperament, not from a pet store. The ones in pet stores are rarely well socialized and will be more likely to bite. If you get one from a family who has too many or doesn't want it anymore, you'll have a better chance of finding one that's friendly.

You could just adopt a cat or kitten. That way you'd have no cage to clean out and cat's are pretty easy and usually get along with children well. I don't think any animals, even the small ones, should be kept in cages. Would you want to be kept in one room your entire life? Not to mention the conditions in which those animals are breed and sold. If you do insist on getting a small pet such as a rat or hamster, why don't you try to find one to adopt rather than buying one from a pet store.

Well, with proper care, a rat (yes a rat) can be an excellent pet. Rat's have the least tendancy to bite of any rodent pet. If always handled with care and treated nicely, they will make a fine companion for at least 2 years. There is alot of fine rat information on the internet so be sure to surf around and learn about them. They are a very social animal and enjoy good attention. Best of luck to you.

My six-year-old granddaughter has a Gecko. It feeds on crickets you can buy from the petstore. They have cricket containers made of plastic there where the crickets stay until they are fed.
The gecko is taken from its terrarium occasionally and gently played with.
The gecko is more vulnerable than your child, so this is a good way to teach gentleness and respect for a pet.

It took me a weekend when I fist got him to teach him not to nip...and never had problems with him biting at fingers..he would however attack the occasional sock...lol...Or flowy dress my mom would wear...lol...Great pets to have though....

Hamsters or Guinea Pigs are good pets for young kids. You must buy them when they are young so that they will get used to being handled by people and the child must realize that he has to be gentle with them too.

Hamster!!!! ^-^ I've had like like 17 in my life and i;m only 16!!! haha!! but if you like reptiles, they're also cool except that they take a wholleeeeeeee lot more of maintenance like having right temperature and correct food. so you have to really think about it because hasmters are also a tedius job, like cleaning the cage often and giving it food. they eat a lot =]

A Ball Python is a wonderful pet. Start with a young one and let it grow with the child.
