My son is 4 months old and had the same thing a couple weeks ago and after took him back to the dr and found out that the cold had given him an ear infection which was causing him to be in pain, so that could possibly be the cause. The dr put him on antibiotics and within a day he was alot better.

Be sure to visit a doctor to make sure that your son doesn't have RSV or any other infection. If his ears are infected that could cause a lot of pain which an antibiotic can help clear up. Also, it's possible that he is reacting to the cold medicine. Check with your doctor or the pharmacist to see if there's something else you can try. Finally, he may be very plugged up so laying down could be causing a yucky backup in his throat. Try saline spray in his nose and then use a bulb syringe to suction the goop out. You can also sit with him in a steamy room (run your shower) to help ease congestion. Hope he feels better soon.

Try putting him in a baby swing to help him sleep. It will keep him propped up and he can be rocked/swung gently. You are right, you cannot hold him for the next few days while he gets over it or he will be spoiled. The baby swings are great for this though.

you could prop up his mattrass with some books so he sleeps at an angle, so he doesn't get liquid stuck in his chest or nose.

you could also put his head over a steaming bowl of water (careful not to scold your baby with the steam), this will also helphis breathing.

have you tried giving him a baby paracetamol? I find this helps my children to sleep even when they are very fretful.

you cannot spoil him with picking him up at the moment, maybe he needs it, and you just need to get through the next few days until he gets over.

if he's five months old, your best bet is to take him to the doctor. instead of dimetapp, i'd give him tylenol. it has a pain reliever, which will help with any discomfort he's having. it could also be possible that he has an ear infection. untill you can get him to the dr, go get some childrens tylenol plus cold, set up a water vaporizer in his room (if you have one) if not, they are like 10 bucks at walmart. they also have vics vapor rub for babies, it works great for my daughter. it will help with any congestion. if you decide to get him some tylenol, call your dr to see how much to give him. sometimes, a warm bath can help sooth little babies. i hate it when the little ones get sick! poor little guy! take care, i hope he feels better soon!

Is he not sleeping when you lay him down b/c his nose is stuffed up and he can't breathe? If so, try some saline drops and either kleenex or a buld sryinge to remove the mucous.

I am going through it right now too with my 6 month old! Good luck!
