This has been the best year we have had in a long time. I have received a large bonus for many years. I have come to depend on it as part of my salary. This year, it was a little over a hundred dollars. I am confused and dissapointed. No he does not have to give one at all, but we have come to depend on it since its been the same for years. I thought it was not nice!! He knows we depend on it. I think he should have told us before making the choice so at least we woudl not depend on it for xmas gifts for our kids.

In my opinion, there is no excuse for the surprise. If there is a valid reason for a smaller bonus (there may be despite your claim that the company had a great year) the boss should have prepared you ahead of time. I would not dream of cutting a bonus without doing that. While it is an extra gift, if given every year, the employees do plan on getting it.

I agree with you. Were you able to to talk to him about it? Have you been able to disreetly talk to others in the company about if they got less as well? I obviously wouldnt ask just anyone, but maybe there is a co-worker you can trust to ask to see if everyone's bonus was smaller?
