One day I spent an hour listening to songs that were popular and on the top 100 of this music chart thing on AOL-- which is similar to YahooMusic's. I didn't get through all 100 of the songs obviously because I thought I would go crazy if I listened to anymore...
Ha ha... Yeah, every body has his/ her own tastes but people make me wonder...

Sometimes I do, which is why I get tired of popular music so quickly. There are times when I think too many people are listening to the beat and not the words, and then there are other times when I think that the words are so profound that they strike a chord deep within people that they don't even realize it. Take 'Stairway to Heaven' for example...it's so popular, but how many people really stop to listen to the words? For a long time, when I was a teenager, I didn't get why it was so popular, and then I listened to the words and it made perfect sense to me. It's an amazing song, and I think it falls into the category of one that just strikes that chord in people without them knowing it consciously.....but then again, that's just my opinion :)

For the most part, a popular song is a combination of good lyrics, solid music, excellent fronting, and energy. There are some exceptions though & those certain songs that have a lack in one or more of these areas can really make me wonder just how they hit the charts in the first place.

Amazes me that we can recall the words to songs we like, and recognize them after 1-2 notes... and music is so universal. I'd like to read/see a scientific study on this. Popular, hits the right chord in the ost people -- or, simply was promoted the most with jiggling girls in heels, and gansta rappers in jeans & sneakers (these days).

Some people are taken by the words and where the song leads you to. I am attracted by the music and then maybe the words. The instruments that are in the piece of music, how they interact with the words. I LOVE MUSIC !

well, it's usually for the lyrics (they must be really easy to remember) and the rythm (must be very easy, lol)... and they will get popular really fast.
