Bonus are not considered part of the compensation that is regulated by Wage & Hour laws. But it is not ethical to change the bonus structure without giving everyone a heads' up, in my opinion.

Is the bonus a profit share? At least your bonus wasnt the jelly of the month club (Christmas Vacation reference)

I think it's only fair that if bosses are going to give bonuses, it needs to be the same amount for everyone, every year, no matter what. That way, people aren't dissappointed because it's smaller than before or because so and so got more than I did. But, overall, I think you should be thankful you got anything. A bonus is just that - a BONUS. No matter how big or small, it's still money that you didn't actually work for.

If he usually gives large bonuses and suddenly starts giving smaller ones, I would worry about how well his business was doing and start to consider what I would do if the business didn't survive. with the economy the way it is a lot of small businesses have failed and left people out of work so it is by far better to have a small bonus and continue to have a job rather than a large one and then be layed off.

It's his choice. Has business fallen off this year? A Christmas bonus is not mandatory.
