There are 640 acres in a square mile. There are 1760^2=3097600 square yardsin a square mile so there are
3097600yd^2/mi^2/640 acres/mi^2=4840 yd^2/acre

1 acre * (1mi^2 / 640 acres) * (1760 yards / mile) ^2
= 4840 sq-yards / acre

(NOTE: 1 football field apprx 1 acre and
1 football field = 100 x 50 yards = 5000 sq-yards ...
pretty close "rule-of-thumb" approximation)
