If you've seen and enjoyed the Star Wars movies, I'd recommend showing them in the same order you viewed them. That's most likely starting with Episode 4. Your child will have the opportunity to respond to the same things that got you interested in the series - space robots, action scenes, a classic story of good vs. evil. And the way the "originals" were made, the concepts are explained as they're introduced. If you start with Episode 1, you get this concept of the "Force" thrown into the story without the same level of background that Ben Kenobi offers in Episode 4. (Here, I'm relying on the input from a journalist who watched the movies for the first time ever, watching them in numerical order from Episode 1 to 6: http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1558880_1_0_,00.html )

And, I'd recommend giving your child some time between movies to prevent overload. If Episode 4 was good, let them watch it a second time and absorb all of those details. They'll appreciate the later movies more.

And I'd only recommend showing Episodes 1-3 if you actually enjoyed them. No sense putting both of you through that torture otherwise. ;-)

I think you should do the pre-quels first because that leads you up to the old Star Wars movies. I have no clue why George Lucas wanted to film the last half of Star Wars before finally deciding to film the pre-quel movies. It doesn't make sense to me to do it that way. Its almost like the Hannibal movies. They were filmed backwards too.

From a story stand point I would say go in the proper order with the Phantom Menace being first and the Return of the Jedi being the last .

From a technological I would say do it in reverse because the technology and special effects get better and are more advanced. Kids tend to pick up on stuff like that.

Start at episode one, and work your way up. Explain to them how we had to wait for 30 years for the story to be complete.
