Grammer schools have not been abolished.

A Labour government which was opposed to selection gave local authorities the right to abolish grammer school in their borough if enough parents in that borough voted for it.

That Labour government was hoping that Grammer schools would be replaced by a system of comprehensive education whereby all children would be educated in the same school regardless of intelligence and then they would be streamed into different sets in relation to their ability.

However, there are many parts of the country which are strongly conservative and these areas have never had Labour councils and as a result they have never attempted to abolish Grammer Schools. Kent is one of these areas where Grammer schools still flourish.

Blair and 'New' Labour were the ones who accelerated the recent demise almost from the outset of 1997, but as long as grammar schools have existed, labour has officially been against the idea. Interesting to note how many labour politicians over the years (bliar himself included) have sent their children to fee paying or grammar schools.

Gwyn Prosser (Lab, Dover) who's offspring I went to school with is another one I can think of...

The Labour party hates anyone else having a better education than they do so the policy is reduce all to the same low level. Just look at Prescott, the only reason he is where he is is due to union pressure nothing else, would you like to have him as PM?

Yes it was Labour. Unfortunately it's the politics of envy.
Grammar schools are a fine system and I hope to get one of my own boy's in Lancaster Grammar when he is old enough.
Even if he doesn't manage to get in I would not wish to see the demise of the Grammar school and the people that do are just jealous of the ones who do get in.

Grammar education has not ended. I went to a grammar school in Northern Ireland, and it's definitely still there.

Buckinghamshire still has local authority grammar schools and the 11+ - no fees of course. It is a conservative county.
