I am hearing nightmare customer service tales and non-functioning phones when it comes to Tracfone. I am not interested in anything that requires a contract of any kind.
I just want a pay-as-you-go service with modern phones (flip phones, not the old lookin' phones).

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I use cingular go phone for my two teens so far I like the service and
if you have friends/family that have regular cingular service you can talk to them unlimited for a buck a day only on the days you use the phone. It is 10 cents a min otherwise if you call someone who doesn't have cingular. So far I have gotten good reception and the phones are decently priced.

It depends on how much you plan on using your phone, if it is occasional use the Virgin Mobile tends to have the best options. If you are after a monthly plan that includes unlimited minutes and text messaging then Cricket may be a good option.

About.com has a nice comparison quiz set up that may help you evaluate your options...
