Now that Anne Bancroft has died? Long ago Time Magazine named her as such, and I agree. Today we have Meryl Streep and a lot of other talented actresses who can do many things. And Britain still has Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. But are there any American actresses in Anne Bancroft's class?

Definitely Meryl Streep and, although she doesn't work much anymore, I'd put Michelle Pfiefer in that class. I think Renee Zellwegger is on her way to that level, too.

That would be actresss... not actor. Hilary Clinton's fake ability to care and seem in touch with the world if you want to be political.
Otherwise I would have to say Julianne Moore for a more modern "American". Unfortunately, it is all relative and based on what is shown on screen... sucessfully. We no longer have any single "star" like Marylin Monroe. Many actresses also get caught up in politics now as well, so dull their on screen presence.
