I am 5 foot 3 and 87 pounds. I am 14 years old. I haven't gotten my period yet. It is because I am skinny?

Heck no! I was 5'5 and 80 lbs at 12 when I got my period. Your size has nothing to do with it. Strenuous excercise can delay the onset of a mentrual cycle though. Are you an athlete? That may be the cause, otherwise it's probably just your genetics. Ask some of the older women in your family (mom's side and dad's side) when they first experienced theirs. Besides it's not something you want to rush sweetie. Trust me. I've dealt with it for 14 years and I wish I would have had a couple of extra years without mine!

It depends on how old or young your mother was when she got her first period. That's genetics. Ask your mom. My mother was 12 when she got hers and I was as well. I don't think weight has anything to do with your period(unless you were an anorexic, but I don't think that's your case). I was 12 when I got mine. I was 5'2" and 78lbs, with pretty much no boobs, or curves at all. Whoever told you that weight had anything to do with your period starting obviously was off(except in the case of an anorexic where an anorexic's periods would stop, but that is typically Secondary Amennorhea, in which mentrual periods happened but then ceased to continue happening due to certain unhealthy circumstances ). But you don't have that. Don't worry.
Consider yourself lucky. Periods are not at all pleasant or fun.

By the age of 16 , if you have not yet had your first mentrual cycle you should get checked out by a doctor, as you could have Primary Amennorhea, which is a condition in which you have not had a mentrual period by the age of 16.

You are fairly thin for your height. You need to look at the big picture. Are you growing 'boobs'? Are you otherwise healthy?
If you are growing breasts, that means things are going along. If not, just go see your Dr.! If the Dr. says everything is ok....the best advice is.....DON'T WORRY! Things are gonna happen on your own schedule! worrying will just delay it longer! Also, if all is ok.......just be glad you don't have periods! Trust me!
If the Dr. says there is a problem.....just be glad you found out, get it taken care of, and everything will work out!
Keep your chin up little one!

If you are skinny enough, ie anorexic, yes, that can delay or even prevent you getting your period. It's serious stuff. I knew a 23 year old woman who never got a period and probably never did after that either, which meant no babies ever. 87 lbs is too little for someone of your height and age.

No. It all has to do with hormones and stuff like that. I don't think weight really plays much of a factor in when you get your period, if it even affects it at all.

No, it's based on genetics. It has nothing to do with body type.

I got my first period at 13. I was skinny back then.

I am not sure, but I don't think so. Was your mom or your grandma a late starter? Don't worry, your lucky that you don't have to worry about it yet!
