Perhaps, because they are glad they were smart enough to see the mistake. Try this: The next time someone finds a typo, smile at them, and give them kudos! When I teach, if one of my students catches me in an error, I put their name on the board with a smile. It makes them feel good, and is my way of saying, "Thank you for paying attention". Even little errors get smiles from me. After that, nobody thinks I am stupid, or "freaks out"- they are busy grinning and looking for another smile, even at college level. : c )

There are a number of possible reasons.

1. You could be correcting others, and they may be trying to make you look like a hypocrite.

2. You could have a reputation of misspelling things, so even misspelling something once makes you a target for correction.

3. You may be saying something that is controversial and the others disagree with your opinion. But not knowing how to attack your opinion in a compelling or understandable way, they look for any fault they can.

4. There are people who correct others in order to feel superior or feel their brains rattle.

5. There are people who are snobs or hang around snobs, and they feel they must show off their superior intellect or impress others.

6. Some people are just jerks.

7. Since there is very little to use to judge a person online, spelling and grammar are one of the few things there are. Some even use it as a basis to distrust what you say.

If you're critising other people's spelling then expect it back at you!

Otherwise, I've not really noticed people freaking out about spelling on here...unless the person in question deserves to be taken down a peg or two.
