I have to say yes, because I've helped someone that NEEDED it when it was dangerous for me and it pissed me off. I did what I did because it was necessary, not because I wanted anything.

That's a tough one. I want to say yes it is possible but extremely rare.

Whenever anyone does anything they usually have something to gain. It could be an obvious reward or it could be something more subtle like praise from others or the person you did the dead for. It could even be done to look good in god's eyes - if the person believes in such a thing. Or maybe just to make the doer feel like a better person to his/her self.

I don't think so. That was an episode on Friends where Phoebe was trying to do something truly unselfish, but ended up making herself feel good in the process.

Sure. I see examples of that all the time. In fact, I council young people to learn to enjoy the secret knowledge of doing an unselfish act....even if it is small.

Yes, sacrificing your life for someone else would, to me, be the epitome of an unselfish act. Since you're dead, you won't ever hear any praise...

The only situation I am aware of is when a parent protects their children. Our primary function in life is to have children so that we can ensure the survival of our genes. A parent will do literally anything to ensure the wellbeing of their offspring.

I doubt it, any act has some kind of reward. Even helping someone gives the person who is helping a sense of self importance and validation.

Of course, go to a church put a 100 dollar bill in the collection plate and leave. No thanks, no tax deduction, no recognition, nothing. Granted you will have the knowledge you helped someone but that can not be avoided.
