Most of us do.

Yes we should.

Because that is what makes America great.

If respect for authority is what makes America great, why did the founders rebuke the authority of their sovereign king and revolt?

The only political authority in America is that granted by the American people. If we revoke that authority, it ceases to be, and need not be respected. Unfortunately, we've given it all to corporations and haven't gotten around to revoking it yet.

Slight Edit In Response: The question referred to us as a nation, not us as a culture. A nation is a political entity, so the question was interpreted as being one of politics, not cultural mores.

by the things that are posted on this site it would seem like no. it seems like no one respects authority any more.
yes we should respect authority. parents are the first authority. and it starts at home.
if you can't respect authority then you respect nothing. and a life of no respect is a life of trouble.

Most people only respect those authorities with whom they agree. We should repect legitimate authority but still feel free to question it. The alternative is anarchy, which is inevitably followed by autocracy.

Our nation is the authority.

We clearly dont respect ourselves as we allow our politicians to whore themselves to corporate america and sell our interests to the highest bidder.

Gen-X was the first generation to come of age after the shift in social values, and changes in public education.

It's been downhill ever since.

this is one of the current downfalls of this country. just look and listen to kids these days and you will here what they are being taught. "you cant disrespect me.. you cant diss me..... who are you to tell me what I can and cant do"... this is being said to not just citizens but police officers and officials. There has to be rules and regulations and this society is trying to rid the country of those rules that set a standard. This idiotic idea that you are free to do anything you want is going to get much worse...
