I often make decisions without giving it a lot of thought or prayer. Recently, I’ve been looking back at my patterns and feel this may have some impact on issues I’m having.

Sometimes that first thought is not a thought at all but a suggestion. But remember, as it goes, we are given direction, if we choose to listen, but others also need help, so a suggestion made to you may be designed for the benefit of another.

I'd step back a little from philosophy and will go into more science, psychology.

Your first mind can be your right mind most of the time. Think of the advice people get on multiple choice to go with the first mind and it works. It is simply your implicit memory making the decision based on what you already know and what you innately desire but without you conciously knowing how it's done.

However, you know that what you have deep down in your mind might not always be right. St Paul says " that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out...Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. "...As you can see, it is not easy to discern. So, good thought and prayer can help you discern whether your "first mind" is the "right" one; that your innate desires are going with the wave of God's will. At the start, it is hard but as time goes and one grows spiritually, it becomes easier to discern.

Whatever works for you, sweetie.
IMHO, on exams and standardized tests, always go with your first instinct. However, life is not an exam.
The trick is not having any regrets. If you always go with your first instinct and when you do that you have no regrets, great. If you think you should have thought about it more, try that, and if it doesn't give you any regrets, great. Some people go one way, some people go the other way. The way that gives you least regrets is the best way.
And, if you have regrets either way, you have self-confidence issues and need to get a little self-esteem. Course, if you NEVER regret anything, you're an arrogant prick.

Your first mind tends to draw from experience and can be impulsive.
Depending on the issue sometimes your first mind is right on. If your mind is in conflict do think, learn, research, pray, etc. before you make a decision.

My first words on reading Popper where "this bloke is an idiot" (he was still alive then).

Now since then I have realised that this, from my first mind, was one of the most stupid things I have ever said in my life.

So: NO your first mind is not always your right mind.
