Depends on what the person who mistook you thinks a lesbian looks like. If there idea of a stereotypical lesbian is something you do not find attractive then you have the right to be a little bit offended. I'd be a little aggravated at them just for stereotyping in general.

I have a best friend that is more like a sister to me than merely a friend. She was my "best woman" at my wedding. My parents call her "twoey" (daughter #2). My brother bickers with her. She gangs up with my brother to ridicule me. Her parents call me when they are worried because she is out of town and they haven't heard from her. We are very close even though we live in different cities. When we are together we are often pegged as being lesbians. All through high school there were rumors. We thought the rumors were sort of fun (guys like the thought) and we felt rebellious even though we weren't actually lesbians ("how punk rock" we thought). Most of the time I could care less. Every once and awhile I am offended. Mostly when someone makes a comment. Then I am offended that someone could be so judgemental, discriminatory, homophobic, and rude. It is none of their business one way or the other.

I have never been mistaken for a lesbian although I have been openly one for 44 years or so.
your question reminds me of an incident at work. when Gwen and I came back after lunch and were passing the smoke filled lunch room. A bright young thing caroled " Oh here come the SPINSTERS. Couldn't get a man to save themselves."
Spinster I may be now but possibly not in the way her mind was working.
Love and blessings for the New Year.

As a gay man I guess if someone thought I was a lesbian it would be okay. As long as I looked like a butch lesbian, because I really don't have any feminine qualities. I wouldn'be offended, just confused.

No, not at all. In fact I would further the query by asking them - do you really think so ? Let them explain what it is about my appearance that has them suspecting or assuming that I'm gay.

Getting offended or angry only shows how emotionally unstable you are about your appearance. And personally, that would be just plain silly.

One of the best compliments I've had recently was when a coworker told me the suit I was wearing looked gay. (For the record, it was a very nice, very conservative, charcoal-colored business suit.) I told him thanks and moved on. But then, if I was straight I don't know if I would have been offended or not. I take it as a compliment to the fact that I'm well dressed and clean...so many of my straight friends aren't LOL.

Nope. I get that all the time. I used to joke with my friends that somewhere in Topeka, Kansas there was a lesbian who kept getting mistaken for straight...LOL...Don't worry about it...people like to try to box people in...it frustrates them to no end when you don't fit into any boxes. Smile and continue wrecking havoc upon their world.

I'd take the compliment and walk away. Then again I am a lesbian and that whole butch lesbian look is the look I try for.

No. I wear my boyfriend's clothes all the time, and have been hit on by lesbians more than once while wearing them... I think it's sort of funny, and even a little bit flattering.

Not at all. Being a decently dressed straight guy in SF, California, I am constantly hit on by gay guys... Personally, its kinda flattering... If I cant get a woman, at least I know I can get SOMEONE!! Not that I would...but its nice to know I wouldnt be alone...
