I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but it seems to me that the people that act and talk and think they are really intelligent are actually idiots. They go around sticking their nose in the air and debating idiotic things hours upon hours and get nowhere.

They don't see things that are right in front of them and are almost too smart for their own good. A lot of them don't have common sense. Anyone else notice this at all or at least kind of what I'm talking about?

I couldn't really find the right words to explain so sorry if I offended someone or if my point isn't coming across because I may have said it wrong.

No suprising answers so far. I figured people would be defensive and close minded.

I don't know where you think you are getting by insulting me. I could really care less what you think of me. Try answering the question properly or do something else useful and stop wasting both my time and yours.

What you're talking about is pretentiousness. Certainly there are well-educated people who are very pretentious and yet who have very little life experience or common sense. This is especially true of people who were born into wealth and prestige and who received an excellent education at superior schools simply because their Daddy went there first. But there aren't really very many people like this in the world, now, are there?

The majority of the well-educated people I know personally are neither pretentious nor lacking in common sense. They are capable of intelligent debate about issues both abstract and concrete, and they generally have a lot more world experience than uneducated people do. And when I say "world experience," I don't necessarily mean traveling the world and staying in expensive hotels; most of these people tend to get "out of their box" and are exposed to various different cultures and lifestyles a lot more often than your average redneck does.

So while I would agree that having a clichéd silver-spoon upbringing and education doesn't necessarily make you a more well-rounded or intelligent person, I really many people like that in reality, not here in the United States, anyway. I think that so-called "common sense" depends primarily upon having been exposed to a variety of situations and a variety of different cultures during one's life, and higher education is certainly one way of broadening one's life experiences, not only via classes but via social interactions as well.

Common Sense...Mmmmmmm...... who can say what is common sense or not.... what is common sense to one person does not necessarily mean it is common sense to an other.
Common Sense has too broad a meaning and cannot always be used in a situation.

To be well-educated does not necessarily mean that they stick their noses in the air.......I think you have been leading a very narrow existence and need to get out in the world and see people for the person and not what you think they are because of their education, the way they talk, etc.etc. it seems to me you tend to stereotype people.....open your world and mind.......people from all walks of life can be very interesting and educational to everyone.

No I am not a well educated person....just educated.

Sometimes the people who are most interested in books, grades in college, etc. enjoy spending their time that way and thus, do not pursue a social life. This leads to being socially naive, almost as though they lived life in a bubble and were unable to deal with many social situations. MANY people I know are "book smart" and not "street smart". I wouldn't say they were stupid, just that their intelligences lay in other areas.

From my experience: People who think they're smart but really aren't are idiots. People who really are smart usually aren't idiots.

Maybe you're running into the people who only think they're smart, or maybe the people who really are smart are too smart for you so you just don't get them.

Edit: After reading your past questions, I am now convinced you are a troll. I really like the PetSmart question, but the others... not so much.

Sometimes, stupidity is defined as a lack of common sense. And, yes, I've met a few very well-educated people with a lack of common sense. So, to answer your question, some "smart" people can be stupid, but so can people who don't have the education. Common sense, or lack of it, knows no boundaries!

I'd really love to see what you believe are "things that are right in front of them". I bet it has a lot to do with god.

Back to your point, no, smart people really are smart, and people who call smart people idiots really are idiots.

No, you didn't say it wrong; you made it perfectly clear how small and petty you are. Try getting a good education yourself and see if that nonsense about "smart people are really stupid" still holds.
