is there an ethnic tension between Persians and Arabs that i am not aware of?

For the same reason you'd be mad if they called you a Mexican. Arabs and Persians are both from the Middle East, and US citizens and Mexicans are both from North America. And yes, there is tension between these ethnic groups which fortunately limits the alliance between Shiites in Iran and Iraq.

Actually there is....
An Arab implies that they belonged to the desert nomads that remained in the Middle East (specifically near the Palestine) after Rome deported all the Hebrews out of the region in 70 C.E.
They are the 'lesser tribes' the Hebrews referred to and are supposedly descended from Abrahams other son Ismael himself.
A Persian is descended from the Persians and Assyrians.
Different culture all together, and responsible for conquering the 'Arabs' before Mohammat came along.
....and yes..... it'd be like an Arab calling a guy from Alabama a 'Damn Yankee'...... or telling someone from Atlanta that General Sherman was a 'Great General'....

Because they are not Arabs. No there is no tension between Persians and Arabs.

Arab refers to a people of an Arabic speaking language. The primary language in Persia/Iran is Farsi.
Also Arab is more offensive to say than Arabic...especially if you have a Southern accent

Because they aren't Arabs, they are Iranian/Persian.
People in general don't like it when ignorant people refer to them incorrectly as belonging to an ethnic group of which they do not belong.
