Why was medieval life organized around feudalism and the manorial system?

To support expensive armies of highly trained and mounted troops that couldn't spend time farming.

mainly because the kings and nobles/lords were greedy bastards, and it was easier for them to make the poorer people do their work, as long as they promised to protect the serfs (poor farmers who worked on nobles land) when there was a war.
