what are you talking about? I came back....what a trip! Until now i have chosen to keep it hush hush but now I have written my book and will share all with the public. The future is great, a far cry from what Star Trek envisions it to be. haha! My favorite thing in the future is the single pod planet hopper, a craft that lets you travel to distant planets in no time at all...everyone has one so you can travel singly or in groups....what a blast.... you will have to wait for my book to come out to find out the rest!

I watched a show about space on the Science Channell. It explained that if someone were to build a spacecraft capable of space travel and could reach the speed of light, then it could travel into space and back for 2-3 years, but when they returned to earth 2-3 years later, life on earth would have aged for a thousand or so years. If that's true, then I guess that would be a form of time travel as they would have travelled into the future.

Professor Stephen Hawking argues that it may be unlikely to travel in time for the very same reason you have stated. He believes that people would be able to prove their travels if they had the technology to make the trip.

This is because only by using quantum theory and wormholes can time travel be possible under the law of Einstein's theory of relativity which states nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. This is because it would take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate an infinitely-increasing-in-mass particle. (mass increases as matter accelerates because energy and matter are equal, e=mc^2)

So, we need a wormhole which bends space-time in the opposite direction than is usual and acts as a transportive device, abiding by the laws of relativity and not requiring we travel faster than the speed of light. However, in order to create wormholes, we would need matter with NEGATIVE masses and NEGATIVE energy, which quantum theory DOES allow.

However, we have yet to create the technology this requires. It is so complex, that anyone using it to travel back to us would indeed need to be able to have full understanding of it and explain it to us.

Perhaps they 'of the future' are aware of the dire consequences of time travel and do not engage in it or simply do not intervene in our world if they do travel back. The thing is, to avoid that temptation with the knowledge, humankind would need to have evolved far past us in intelligence, mentality, will power and insight of the universe.

Perhaps we just die out before we develop such things and evolve so well.

People have time traveled and come back for years. Consider space travelers. The closer a person gets to the speed of light, the more time is slowed for that person. Those who travel on the space shuttle for example travel at about 16000 per hour. After returning to earth, less time has elapsed for them than for the rest of us who had been terrestrial all along.

But can you prove that no one has come back yet? I mean if you went back in time, would you be going around telling everyone. And even if you did, wouldn't they think you're crazy? So since, you can't prove that someone hasn't come back then of course there is still a chance that a way to travel through time will be found.

It is impossible to time-travel back or forth within your own universe as this would create paradoxes (i.e., you travel back and kill your grandfather - how could you have been born to kill him?)

However, it is perhaps possible to travel to other "mulit-verses" that are similar to ours but slightly different and affect things there.

Never-the-less, assuming there are other civilizations millions of years more advanced than ours that would have been able to figure out time travel by now, one would think we would be over-run with these "time-tourists", yet we arent.

So it may not be possible for biological beings to travel in time.

if there's one thing i know, it's that you can never be absolutely sure anything cannot be done. i believe it would safe to assume that 200 years ago, people were quite positive it would be impossible to converse instantly with another person on the other side of the globe, let alone send them photos, recorded music, and moving pictures... themselves all unimaginable at the time as well.

if you look to the right sources, you can find many instances of someone moving across time. listen long enough to art bell's "coast to coast" on your local radio station and your bound to hear a caller or guest discussing their travels. imagine yourself as a time traveller going back 200 years and telling people about cell phones, ipods, space travel, the internet and microwave ovens. even ben franklin would think you were a bit nutty.

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but I don't see how you could possibly "travel" back in time. Time is only an abstract concept defined by humans. Probably somebody wanted to meet somebody else in the stone age to go out for mammoth hunting, and they agreed to call the time when the sun was at its zenith "noon". :)
But anyway, why would you WANT to go back in time? Just watch any sci-fi movie and tell me that it wouldn't mess up the space-time continuum.

you need a wormhole stretching between two times and a huge amount of energy to do it. or you could somehow travel through the fifth dimension, but by doing it that way, you'd be traveling between paralell almost identical universes, you cease to exist in our universe and pop up at an earlier time at the other universe. to residents of that universe it would be like you showed up from nowhere. so long-winded anser means no, people could have left our universe and traveled back in time to a paralell universe.

How do we know no one has come back? If President Kennedy was never assassinated and someone went back in time and killed him it would always seem to us as if he had been killed. Also, if someone did travel through time, why in the hell would they come back and tell us?
