Have you found yourself or are you still a societal clone?

To be fair I will also answer this question.

I am not me yet. I am trying, but it is hard.

We are all they and us and we and you.

This is because from infancy we are the champion mimickers. As children, we mimic how other children behave, speak, walk, look, etc. Everything you have ever thought has been influenced by another source which was of course influenced by something as well and onward.

Think about the fact that you cannot perceive any color than those you have seen. You may say, "Well there isn't any other color", but do you know that ? Just because you can't perceive something independent of the primary colors of our world doesn't mean there isn't something else.

This idea actually has a name: Meme effect. "Memes" are the term which refer to everything from thoughts, feelings, actions, to pictures, representations, 'spontaneous' actions or words, patterns of speech and behavior, fads etc.

It may be a damper on individuality, but it doesn't necessarily take away one's individuality. Everyone interprets things differently. Of course that is also influenced, but we all have a different collection of memes and different interpretations which all compile into one unique individuality.

So I guess you can definitely say you are YOU if you own it and embrace it without trying so hard to do so which only reflects seeking attention from others. But at the same time you are me, and her, and them. The human race truly is a universal one, and like Whitman, Emerson and Throrough stressed, there certainly is a very real "Oversoul"; a single one of us is billions and billions of us, and billions and billions of us is a single one.

I'm still a societal clone trying to find myself...aren't we all? To get married or not to get married, to have kids or not to have kids, to get a well-paying job or follow our hearts into the gutter? I think the important thing is to think for yourself - never lose your curiosity, no matter how hard you want to fit in.

To hard to explain! But yeah, it is hard to find truly yourself...it should take a lifetime though...you are always changing. I know I am looking at myself and trying to just "go" "be" but that social boundary "What will they think of me?" always catches me.

Yep, I'm glad to say that I'm me - I like societal norms - to an extent. I like saying, "Please," and "thank you." I like letting someone who needs to merge into traffic in front of me. I like PTA meetings.
