Meta keyword tags hold very little weight these days, although a well written meta description can pull a visitor in even if you're not at top spot, I'd concentrate on the following:

Selecting a couple of keywords/phrases per page and placing these into the page title without too many other words if possible (very important). Using these keywords for your headers and on page text without looking too spammy.

For the above keywords go to Google, Yahoo etc and type
link:www.example.com
For any top competitors sites that appear for these keywords to see who's linking to them.

You probably won't be able to compete against some sites on Google due to their age but you might be able to compete with a good linking stratergy.

The linking to your site will help big time but you have to be carefull who you're getting links from and how you're getting them.

There's no silver bullet for getting to the top of the serps and a lot of hard work, that pretty much never stops unless you decide to shut your site down.

You really need to do a lot of research as asking how do I get better ratings on the search engines is like asking how do I build a good website. Fortunately theres a lot of helpful people out there who can give you good solid advice. Heres a few where I started (long time ago).

I'd visit these sites daily or as frequently as possible to keep up to date, and find a few forums.

Also the videos at http://www.webpronews.com are great sometimes not 100% SEO but they give you a bigger picture of whats going on.

Best of luck, you'll probably end up getting sucked into the whole SEO thing like I did if you've got a competitive streak in you.

I would need to take a look at your site first to see what could be done to improve your rankings.

Basiclly with SEO you want to get quality links pointing back to your site. The search engines will see this as votes for your site and mark it as more important and give you better rankings. You can trade links with other sites known as reciprocal linking but you are better off getting one way "backlinks". These are more important to the search engines eyes. You can get one way links by writing articles and submitting them to directories, posting on forums, placing comments on blogs and submitting your site to general and niche directories.

You are also going to need to decide what keywords you want your website to rank well for. You have a better chance of ranking for a 3 or 4 word phrase then a 1 or 2 word phrase. Once you choose your keywords you are going to want to include them in your page title and also repeat them in your page copy and website description in the meta tags.

These are basic SEO techniques but I guarantee you if you implement them you'll be ranking much better than most sites.

Here is a great book on SEO. In my opinion it's the only book you'll ever need to read about the subject and it's constantly updated to all the current trends in SEO.

I completely agree with Daniel in the 1st post. It takes a lot of time an effort to build you inbound links, many website owners outsource this work to companies like ours.

Also, make sure you have built your website correctly making it as SEO friendly as possible. Meta tags really do matter. Have keyword rich content, a sitemap, and a good internal linking scheme.

Content is king, get good stuff on your website and keep it updated, search engines (se) like that, get good links (to reputable sites - on there to you and from you to them - ask), heaps of low grade sites are no good, and potentially harmful.

Then its checking your meta tags are good (either DIY or pay web designer - i take fivers), making sure its relevant to what people are searching for (check out your competitors) and google etc do helpful hints on their site.

Get more traffic (promotion) and that helps to increase your visibility. Hope that helps

I have several sites that are in the top 10 on google and yahoo for my keyword or phrases. The way I did this was by using a program called http://internet-business-at-home.com/seo-elite/index.html
