Cam belt too tight, Cam belts whine, alternators and alternator belts squeal. Does the Astra have a tensioner or does the water pump tension the cam belt?, either way it is more likely to be cam belt than alternator, get a garage to have a look and budget for a belt and tensioner/water pump, or ignore it and buy a new engine a bit later on.

1 poss alternator take belt off start car if noise gone probably alternator
2 with engine off and belt off spin alternator by hand and listen for noise also spin pulleys to check
3 your car should have electric power steering so that should not be effected
4 it could be from the cam belt or its tensioner/guide pulleys
also the water-pump is driven by the cam belt

Couple of option`s :
Fan belt to tight causing wear on the aternator.
Power steering pump may need topping up .
Alternator may be on it`s way out !
Thrust bearing ( press your clutch pedal down to see if the noise go`s )

If you remove the fan belt and the noise stops it is whatever the belt is driving. You probably have a choice.!!!! If it's still there then........

It's probably you whining, and not the alternator. I'd whine a lot if I had to drive a sh*it Astra.
