All snowflakes have one thing in common. They are all six-sided crystals of ice. They can be found in seven different shapes - prismatic column, hexagonal plate, cup, hexagonal column, needle, flat plate or dendrite. There is actually an International Snow Classification System that scientists use to observe the large variety of snowflakes. People always say that no two snowflakes are alike. Considering the fact that the average snowflake contains 1018 molecules of water (that's 10 x 10 x 10, using eighteen 10's!), the number of combinations possible is pretty big to say the least

A snowflake always has six points, which is due to the arrangement of its molecules.
It's said that no two snowflakes are ever the same, but what is more accurate is that you are unlikely to see two identical snowflakes. As the ice crystals form, their shape is fashioned by random chance; it's probably a good example of chaos theory with regard to the way the shape appears.
It would be really nice if they formed with points in three dimensions rather than just in a flat plane.
What can't be denied is that they a really beautiful to look at.

Six. Always six basic stems, with a myriad of different smaller shoots coming off of those six.

It's in the molecular structure of water that it will crystallize with the charactaristic six points.

Six, if it has points. At different temps snowflakes will be cylinders, capped cylinders, plates (six-sided), and six-spoked wheels.
