what you do mean by smallish? Tiger barbs alone need at least 20 gallons.

Definatly dont put anything in there with long fins, as the barbs are nippy. Cat fish, and other tetrasx do well.

wow okay, tiger barbs don't need a 20 gallon ( first reply).
Suitable tank mates include gouramis, other barbs, sharks, catfish, large active tetras, and Silver Dollars. Do not mix them with slow moving fish such as neons, guppies, or bettas, as they can be a fin nipper.
Barbs: Black Ruby Barb, Clown Barb, Gold Barb, Rosy Barb, Tiger Barb, Tinfoil Barb

Botias: Red Tail Botia, Yellow Tail Botia

Catfish: Banjo Catfish, Corydoras Catfish, Four Lined Pictus Catfish, Small Plecostomus Catfish, Farlowella Catfish, Pimelodella Catfish, Porthole Catfish, Rafles Catfish, Upside Down Catfish, Talking Catfish, Synodontis Catfish

Cichlids: Festivum, Jurapari Cichlid, Keyhole Cichlid, Kribensis Cichlid, Orange Chromide

Danios: Giant Danio, Pearl Danio, Zebra Danio

Not all of these, you will have to watch how many you put in the tank, so look at how large the fish will be at maturity, good luck.

All barbs tend to be a bit aggressive unless allowed to "school" with at least 2 other same species fish. I've had luck with choosing a topwater, mid, and bottom fish in my tanks. In particular, if the fish you choose are in schools of 4 or more, the Tiger Barbs will most likely leave them alone, provided the Barb has companions also. However, I do have a baby Molly among my school of 6 Mollies, named Nipper - a bit of her tail was missing one morning - and I am suspicious of one Tiger in particular! You can pick up a free chart of compatible fish at PetCo, regardless of how you feel about this store. In addition, a book I recommend for beginners, The Essential Freshwater Aquarium, about $6, covers everything a beginner needs to know, provided they are serious about raising aquarium fish.

I bought Tiger Barbs, foolishly, without checking out the clerk's description before purchasing them. Since I have them, I have made several "roommate" changes, and the one that seems to work the best is: A school of 6 Mollies, (good algae eaters and Cute!), 3 Tiger Barbs, A Blue Gourami (think he intimidates the Barbs and it's cool to see him come up for air), and a Plecostomus as a glass cleaner and bottom feeder. I have live bamboo in my tank and several "rock formations" for the fish to escape to. I also have a pretty golden snail and 3 ghost shrimp I saved from becoming Oscar food.

I know this is a wordy response, but I wish someone would have told me this stuff before I bought the Barbs...now I enjoy their energy and the playful way they have with each other. But if I ever catch the "nipper".....

I had 5 tiger barbs in a 10 gallon tank together and they were highly aggressive. They would nip at each other and even kill each other. I would not recommend putting any other fish into this tank. They do enjoy being in schools though so I would get at least 5.

they have to be aggressive fish that are the same size or just a little smaller. I used to have two tiger Barb's that grew to be like almost three inches long they where awesome fish until they killed both of my crabs and they ate all of my neon's just as I added them to the tank so I had to sell the tiger barbs and then go out and buy more neon's.

I had black tip sharks in my tank with the barbs, ans they got along fine. Mollies are also good with the barbs, but remember barbs tend to nibble on tales.

you may would desire to commerce them in for much less agressive fish- on the same time as barbs are nevertheless comunity fish they decide directly to chase one yet another, and 5 galleons does not supply the "sufferers" lots room to swim away. you need to have extra constructive success with a small college (3-5) og guppies, neons, mollies, zebra danios or something comparable. in case you definitely need to maintain your barbs, attempt is to place some hiding places on your tank- puppy shops sell hollow adorns with holes for this purpose. In a pinch you may positioned some sideways mugs to make "caves" in basic terms verify there is not any cleansing soap on them.
