I'm thinking of buying a new mobile phone over the internet - and the phone I like is cheapest with the Orange network (on phones4u) - however, I would like to keep my old Virgin sim card -(with all my contacts etc.) - is this possible?

For about 15-20 dollars I think you can get address book transfers..or just write down all your contacts and numbers and put them in when you get your phone, save a few dollars.

If you were willing to use orange instead, someone in an orange shop could easily transfer all your contacts to the new phone's card for you. They should also be able to advise on how to transfer your virgin number over to them too. That way you don't need to mess about unlocking the phone (which might invalidate the warranty?) I expect you might prefer to stay with virgin so perhaps not.
Might be worth a call to virgin if you haven't already.
Most service providors tend to offer upgrades for more reasonable fees rather than lose customers. Then again they tend to lean towards people who are more likely to spend more per month.

Try putting the sim card in the phone to see if it will work. If it will not work then you will either have to get the phone unlocked or buy a Virgin sim card. I hope this helps.

You can have most phones unlocked so they accept any SIM card. This usually costs around £20. Alternatively you can get a PIM code from Virgin which will allow you to transfer your number to Orange . You would lose the contacts from your Sim though

The phone you want to purchase will most likely be sim locked to the Orange network. What you would have to do is bring it to a shop or market stall and have it unlocked for about £10.00 Once unlocked you can insert your VM sim and transfer your contacts. You would also be able to use any prividers sim in the phone

Yes, you can unlock the phone - from a site like www.phonesunlocked.co.uk they can give you the software and you just enter the code and you can then use your Virgin SIM card.

yes but you will have to get the phone unlocked... but not all phones are possible to unlock... you can unlock most phones but not all... you will pay about £5 - £15 to get it unlocked depending on the phone or you can try and download one for free from the internet... just search through google and you'll probably find... this is legal

Good Luck
