I would like to put up lights that come on when someone comes near the house or at least something that warns someone coming into the backyard that they are not welcomed. I have a kid that comes into the yard (I have that as another question on here) but I don't want to wake up everyone with something like a car alarm that could go off at 3am. Any ideas?

If you have a floodlight aiming towards the back of the house you might want to change it out with a motion sensor floodlight. Also if your neighborhood causes fear there are companies that sell electronic alarm wedges that go in front of your exterior door on the inside of your home and when the door is opened it pushes down the wedge and sounds an alarm.

Motion Sensor Lights are good, then when you see him in your yard, take a photograph or a video while you are calling the police. Then file a report against him. Major importance here, if you get a dog or anything, get some No Tresspassing Signs, these should be posted no matter what to protect your rights as the landowner.

Do a web search on X10. I have their products. One lets me know someone is coming up the walk.
another turns lights on automatically when I walk into a dark hallway. Another makes a dog barking sound when someone approaches the front door.

If you want really cheap. string mono filament fishing line around the yard, leaving one end loose, and tie a bunch of tin cans to the loose end.

Another way would be to hang a bunch of cans up high, held there by a light weight mono filament, tied to the loop around the yard. Arrange it so that pulling on the loop would break the light weight line.

first off, the kid shouldn't be going into your backyard.. that's called trespassing.

the cheapest way is to go to Home Depot and get some sort of motion sensor light and pull it to your (outside) outlet.

There are electronic sensors that are commonly used in driveways, when the signal is broken by an intruder it sounds in the house to signal to you that "you have company"

just get security system stickers and put them in your window, if a thief see's that and has a choice between your house and another he will pick the other
