Most times it's the corrosion or moisture getting into the electrical contacts of the motor itself. Sometimes if you'll beat at the bottom of the door with a soft face rubber hammer, you can get it to work again and possibly not have anymore problems. If you can hear the motor operating and no window movement then you probably need to replace the motor.

Probably either the motor or the switch that controls the motor. Next time it happens, thump the inside door panel about half way down a few times with your fist and see if it starts working again. If it does, it probably needs a new motor.

I'm guessing that your windows are electric (power) windows and more than likely one of three things or actually one of five things has happened...the window has jumped out of its track, you have blown a fuse...a wire has came off or broken either from the switch to the motor or that delivers power to the motor that controls the window ,..or your switch has gone out...a good mechanic could probably diagnose the problem pretty quick

Possible options are;
The Electrical Connections
The Window Regulator (What makes it go up/down/motor)
Or simply the Door Switch
Hard to tell, unless you have someone check it out.
