Mountain lions (aka pumas or cougars) are indigenous to the North American and South American continents, whereas lions are only indigenous to the continent of Africa. Although they may seem similar, they are actually quite distinct from one another.
Male mountain lions, for example, do not grow manes like male lions do and appear to look very much like their smaller counterparts, female mountain lions. Mountain lions are typically smaller than lions. Another interesting fact is mountain lions cannot roar. Their voice boxes are far too small to produce a roar, but they do 'purr' and are therefore classified as the largest of the family referred to as the "small cats" (despite their relatively large size) because of this trait. Lions cannot and do not 'purr' and are "big cats. Mountain lions are also solitary creatures, whereas, female and young lions commonly live in family groups.
There are a lot of other technicalities in their differences that I won't bore you with, but if you are really interested in one or both of these subjects, I definitely urge you to do your research! They are amazing creatures!

Lions are usually easier to tell apart from a mountain lion, due to the fact that a male lion has a maine thats all fluffed out and what not. the lioness doesnt have that but both the lion and the lioness usually live in the warmer areas like africa. on the other hand mountain lions live where it is usually milder and cooler like northern mountainous areas. hence the word mountain in the name. i hope this helps.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a mammal of the family Felidae and one of four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. The lion is the second largest cat, after the tiger. The male lion, easily recognized by his mane, weighs between 150-225 kg (330-500 lb). Females range 120-150 kg (260-330 lb).[2] In the wild, lions live for around 10–14 years, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. Though they were once found throughout much of Africa, Asia and Europe, lions presently exist in the wild only in Africa and India (where they are found only in the Sasan-Gir National Park).
The puma (Puma concolor), also known as the cougar or mountain lion, is a large, solitary cat found in the Americas. It has a vast range, from Yukon Territory in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. Their primary food is deer, but they hunt prey in a range of sizes, from insects, mice, rabbits, to the domestic cats, domestic dogs, alpaca and even bighorn sheep and elk. They are secretive cats who usually avoid people, and attacks on humans are extremely rare and usually brought on by human actions[1]. Due to overhunting and continual human development of puma habitat, populations have dropped in many parts of their historical range, although recent conservation efforts have allowed the their numbers to improve in some areas.
