St. Nicholas was actually a Christian bishop from the town of Myra which laid on the southern coast of modern day turkey.
Somehow the germanic people took a real liking to this saint from Myra and so his image changed to theirs and he became portly with light skin and rosy cheeks.
Its true that American commercialization changed him to what he is today.
