I'm scouting for a laptop, I found 3 good ones, but for internet access, their network is 802.11b/g. These are Compaq Presario Notebooks. I did a bit of searching and found the Linksys 802.11g Wireless Notebook Card, it says it can do the 802.11b. The laptops' network say they are compatible with the 802.11b network. I just want to make sure it is the correct one.

The 'b' is for 11mbps while the 'g' gets up to 54mbps - the difference remains in the amount of data to be transmitted during a second plus some security enhancements.

Now, the '802.11g' cards are also compatible with '802.11b' networks by behaving like a 'b' card (quite fine for internet access). And 'b' cards can also connect to 802.11g networks but at 'b' speeds.

In conclusion, if you buy a 802.11b/g card you will be able to either connect to a 802.11b network at 11mbps and also to 802.11g networks at 54mbps (faster access) - in this way you will own a card that is capable of faster access than a 802.11b one.

The "b" is just an older and slower version. The "g" is backwards compatible w/"b". However the notebooks you are looking at may already have a WiFi capability, in which case you don't need to buy another card.
