Given how many people are opting for stuff like 'Emmaleigh' or 'Emmilee' over 'Emily,' I'm _not_ buying the excuse that it makes it seem 'unique.'

Why make spelling errors on something so important? What's the appeal?

I have no idea! All it says to me is "My parents don't know how to spell". When you change the spelling of a legit name with history and meaning, you no longer have all of that history behind it. I think it's really a shame. I used to try and change the spelling of my favorite names, but then I grew up. And turned 12.

But you know what? I'd rather a ton of misspelled classics running around then a bunch of girls with boys names. THAT one really bugs me!!! All those moms are taking the good names away from the boys!

Some of these made up names are just stupid but I can see Emmaleigh. My friend had a baby and named her Emmaleigh...after 2 namesakes. Her grandmother Emma and a close friend whos middle name was leigh.

I agree with the others in saying that spelling a name different doesn't make it unique, just confusing. If I wanted something unique I would pick 2 names and arrange them together to make one. For example Jocelyn (joz-lin). It is Joyce and Evelyn combined. If I had a 2nd girl I was going to name her Katura Jocelyn! I think the name is unique in its own way without being common or spelled differently??

I don't know. I just know as a substitute teacher, Kaighleegha (this was on my role list one day. It's pronounced as Kaylee) and other weirdly "creative" spellings get old real fast. The difference between Jason and Jasen is ok. I'd know how to say this, but if it hampers how a person who is more educated than most of the people reading your kid's name is going to pronounce it, there is a problem there.

Emily is a very nice name and Emmaleigh is the silly variant

I have no idea but all the Konnirs, Adonnyz, Emmaleighs, and Nevaehs of the world are going to be mighty pissed one day. I think its hilarious. Instead of sharing a name with someone they will just know that their mom is an illiterate moron. I guess thats what happens when 14 year old girls start popping out kids!

I agree! A new spelling does not make a unique name, just a problem for the child. They go through life all huffy because no one spells their name correctly. If you don't like the spelling of a traditional name, by all means - spell it differently. But for the love of your child don't do it just to be different. There are a lot of people in the world, attempting to have no similarity to any of them is exhausting.

I think people give their baby an outrageous spelling because they are not quite game enough to their baby a strange name. So they might spell Emmiee/Emily because they are too scared to call the baby "Apple" or something crazy like that.

I don't know but I don't like it. I work at a hospital in a very wealthy area and thankfully my patients chose nice solid names that are spelled correctly but in other places I've seen some real winners.

A website that addresses this very thing:

This is a very good question.. Why aren't the old spellings good enough?? I don't have an answer, but these kids are going to have hard times when they have to spell out their name to people their entire life!!
