The original spelling is doughnut but as with much of the language, it is rapidly shrinking due to shortened forms & common use. Now, it is acceptable to spell either way and all too soon, the proper spelling will be lost and only the donut spelling will be remembered.
In a way, that's a very sad progression for humanity.

i prefer Krispy Kremes myself... and donut..
maybe its cos im not a fan of proper doughnuts like we have in the UK, and the US Donuts just seem... better!
