like jimmy carter, ford was a great guy and a class act -- much too good for dirty politics. he basically held things together until the '76 election. it was before my time, so i don't have any recollections firsthand. but in recent years (past decade) i found ford to be a very decent gentleman

President Gerald Ford for was the right man for the time of his Presidency. A good an honest man was exactly what the country needed at the time, he did right by pardoning Richard Nixon and he served the country well. That makes me think that even now we have just the leadership we need for these times.

I was in my mid-teens when he took office after the Nixon resignation. I think the guy was the one who took the bullet for the nation. He knew Nixon was guilty, but didn't have the time to be in the court proceedings, given he was handed an economic and international mess. He really didn't want to pardon Tricky Dick, but, for the good of the nation, did so realizing it would cost him the future election. Many die hard Republicans would not vote for him simply because of the pardon. One thing people haven't mentioned was the great blunder he made in his second face to face Presidential Debate with Jimmy Carter. Ford, in front of an entire nation watching, said, "There is no Soviet domination in Poland, and there never will be under the Ford Administration." That line lost him a lot of voter confidence! Yet, the election that year still went down to the wire, and the outcome was not decided until about 1:00 the next morning. I live near Grand Rapids, MI, and hear about his laying to rest quite a bit on the news! I don't think I'm going to go the viewing. Overall, I thought Ford was a good president, and would have liked to see how he would have done if he had been elected, with his own appointed staff. R.I.P. G.R.F.

Ford was beyond my time, however, from my years of schooling, I have come to respect Ford for all the things that he did during his presidency. You have to remember that he did not necessarily choose to be the president and was practically thrown into the office. By pardoning Nixon, I feel he saved the country from added disconnection between political parties as well as saving tax dollars. All in all as a person who has only studied Ford, I say history is showing him as a great man so far.

I would have lliked to have met Gerald Ford. He seemed like a pretty good man. The pardon of Nixon really pained a lot of people. Nixon was guilty to the point he belonged in jail.

Gerald Ford was a decent, caring man. He didn't need to be in politics in my opinion. I also believe that Richard Nixon was a great president, he just got caught doing what all the other presidnets do. I do not believe anything would be different because of the pardon. Geez, look who we got now half arsing the presidency>> nuf said!!

He was thrown in to the worst possible situation possible, he had to pardon Nixon so congress (the white house) could concentrate on the Vietnam war issues, the gas problems and the high unemployment and high deficit. After ford, The country waisted millions on the Clinton/ Monica saga and even more millions on the whitewater Clinton scandal.

Ford did what he could with what was given to him.

In addition to his pardon of Nixon, I remember his rescue of the ship "The Mayaguez". I was a clerical worker at the Seafarer's Union when it was taken over by hostile elements. Many of our members were serving on that ship. President Ford sent several ships over there and by sheer force of numbers forced the release of our ship. Sounds small, doesn't it. But it was a bold move and many of his advisors were strongly against it. Despite the internal opposition, he went ahead with what he thought was right. This is what I will always remember about him.

He helped heal the country during the Watergate disaster. He was honest, fair, very trust-worthy, a first class president and a true gentleman. I can't say enough about Ex President Gerald Ford, all the good words would fill up many, many pages.
